Title

Consideration of and action on approving a purchase for a replacement generator at the Transfer Station via TIPS contract #221001.

Body

Summary:

In 2021, the Public Works Department purchased a stationary generator for the Transfer Station. Unfortunately, the generator was not properly sized to meet the operational needs of the facility. As a result, the generator could not fully support all systems at once. For instance, when running the Grizzly, it was necessary to turn off essential systems such as the A/C and lights in order to maintain operation. This issue has impacted the efficiency and effectiveness of the Transfer Station’s operations.

To address this, the City Council approved funding in the current fiscal year to purchase a properly sized replacement generator. This new generator will ensure that all systems at the Transfer Station can operate simultaneously without compromise, improving the facility’s overall functionality and reliability.

The existing generator is less than five years old and remains in excellent operational condition. It will be relocated to the crew building at the maintenance facility, where city staff will use it to replace the current 20-year-old generator in use at the building. This replacement will be carried out in-house by city staff.

The purchase will be through The Interlocal Purchasing System (TIPS) vendor Worldwide Power Products (contract #221001).

Fiscal/Budgetary Impact:

The budgeted amount for this project was $81,250.00; however, the actual cost totaled $86,750.00. The $5,500 overage is primarily due to additional crane and freight charges, as well as the cost of relocating the existing generator to its new location at the crew building for future use. This additional $5,500 can be absorbed within our current Public Works budget, and no additional funding will be required.

Recommended action
