Title

Approval of the surplus property list and authorization to auction the surplus property via the Internet through Rene Bates Auctioneers.

Body

Summary:

Attached is a list of vehicles and equipment that have been declared surplus property. City staff recommends that all surplus property be sold through the Rene Bates Auctioneers online auction process.

The City has utilized Rene Bates Auctioneers for several years and has consistently achieved better results than conducting on-site auctions. The online auction platform provides greater exposure to a national pool of bidders, resulting in increased competition and higher sale prices for surplus vehicles, heavy equipment, and miscellaneous items.

Beginning with this year’s auction, Rene Bates Auctioneers will charge a 10% buyer's premium, which is retained in lieu of a commission. This fee is paid by the purchaser; therefore, there is no cost to the City.

Pending City Council approval, the 2026 surplus auction is scheduled to run from Monday, August 31, 2026, through Friday, September 11, 2026, with bidding closing at 12:00 p.m. This schedule will allow the auction process to be completed prior to the end of the fiscal year.

Fiscal/Budgetary Impact:

Any proceeds from the sale of surplus property are recorded as revenue in the General Fund, Account No. 010-000-36140, Sale of Surplus Materials.

Recommended action:

Approve and authorize to auction surplus property via the Internet through Rene Bates Auctioneers.
