Title

Consideration of and action on an ordinance amending Chapter 30, Elections of the Code of Ordinances.

Body

Summary:

During the recent ordinance recodification project, some areas of the code needed to be updated by a new ordinance. Redlined version of the changes has also been attached.

This ordinance will update Section 30 in its entirety as opposed to just approving certain sections:

Chapter 30 - Elections

Section 30-1

Fixed grammar in the second sentence and added that the approved list of qualified voters will be obtained from the Harris County Voter Registrar’s office.

Section 30-3

Updated to change to 1st Saturday in May and update runoff date to reflect recent HB357 change that the Secretary of State sets the runoff dates for uniform May elections.

Section 30-5

Fixed a typo

Section 30-7 Voting Machines

Update this section with the new equipment purchased in 2024 for voting.

Section 30-8 Appointment of judges and clerk

Added to sentence “by city ordinance but not to overwrite”…

Section 30-9 Early Voting

Added the language that there would be at least two early voting dates from 7am to 7pm as it is council’s wish to have two 12-hour days.

Section 30-10 - Notice

Corrected the language to mirror the City Charter 3.05(d) information on publishing election notices.

Fiscal/Budgetary Impact:

N/A.
