Discussion of issues related to assessing a processing fee for credit card transactions.

Summary: 

Credit card merchant fees are increasing every year. Historically, the City has absorbed these fees. Due to the consistent rise, staff wishes to discuss the option to assess a 2.5% processing fee to help recover these costs. Taking a phased approach, staff would first implement the fee in Central Collections (excluding tax payments), Public Works, Police Department, and EMS with a fee for tax going into effect next year.

If City Council is agreeable to the fee, communication will go out in the upcoming water bills, on the City’s website and customer payment portal to notify the customers of this change and offer other payment options to avoid the fee.
