Summary:
CenterPoint is responsible to resolve most power outages, affecting our traffic signals, in a reasonable timeframe, unless the outage is due to some type natural disaster, which could then take hours or days to have the signals placed back in service. Last fiscal year we budgeted funds to install a battery backup system at 8 of intersections along Center Street.
This year we have budgeted $83,000 to install the battery backup system to an additional 13 intersections. With the backup system, if power is lost the system will automatically transfer to battery power and run the intersection for 8 to 10 hours. In situations where power may be out for several days, this system would allow staff time to make the other 16 intersections safe, before turning their attention to the Center St. corridor.
The total cost to purchase the equipment from Consolidated Traffic Controls, Inc. (via Buy Board contract # PE-05-21) is $80,990.00.
